Graffiti Driven, Urban Inspired, Indie Flavored Artwork:
Emelina Spinelli • Principal Artist
My paintings are graffiti driven and urban inspired. After studying graffiti artwork, I became attached to the honesty and sincerity captured within the developing genre. Graffiti artists tend to use the natural energy of the medium (mainly spray paint) in their pieces. Spray paint is a free medium, yet controllable through different sized caps and tips that change the radius, shape, and thickness of the spray; I use artistic mediums in this way, through use all types of paints, from standard acrylics and traditional oils, to high quality artist spray paint and lacquers, selecting materials based on the freeness of the media and the potential of unconventional energy.
Artwork and paintings for me, are a release of raw, experimental, honest energy. I create multiple pieces simultaneously, so that I may easily move my attention from one composition to the next. Text is incorporated into many of the pieces, signifying the importance of words and language in our culture, also representing the original “tagging” used in graffiti art. I use the drips and spatter to represent the complications and distractions of everyday life, and place simple, bright figures such as the fish skeletons in the foreground, in contrast with the more fluid backgrounds. These works can be chaotic, yet controlled, as every movement and line has a place where it fits dynamically within the other marks.
A goal of my artwork is to capture a thought, moment, mood, emotion or idea through the use of materials, color and form. I often look to challenge the limits of graffiti to be used in a gallery-art design. I am inspired by the subject of graffiti and music culture and my influences range from Jean Michel Basquiat, to Alexander Calder, Jackson Pollack, Andy Warhol, Banksy, Lee Quinones, and T.H. Hyndman. Upon viewing my artwork, I would like people to identify within the different artistic elements and relate them to their own life experiences.
My artwork has nutritional value…purchase a piece, and prevent that common phrase “starving artist!”
